CBGB's

I love the physical layers that history leaves behind, and there is no better place to experience this than the rock club CBGB's. These days it's more of a tourist attraction than an "important" rock club, but I still love it. The interior is an astonishing historical artifact, a punk palimpsest. In October 2006, it's scheduled to close after more than 30 years.

This is it- the place where the pilgrims landed on Punk Rock. The precise location where the cultural landscape began to shift, back in 1975. I feel a real connection with history in front of this stage.

Here's the Ramones at CBGB's in 1977. The list of bands that played here is (in)famous:Television, Blondie, the Dead Boys, Talking Heads, Richard Hell and the Voivoids, to name a few.

Walk in back and you pass the dressing rooms. You can look right in, there are no doors. It seems in keeping with the punk ideal, breaking down the barriers between audience and performers.
